For decades the waste management industry has focused on treating traditional pollutants such as oils, heavy metals and solvents. A new challenge is taking centre stage: PFAS and other emerging contaminants that are increasingly found in industrial effluent and wastewater.
At Oates Environmental we believe staying ahead of these challenges is not only about compliance but also about safeguarding the environment, protecting public health and helping our clients prepare for future regulation.
What Are PFAS and Emerging Contaminants?
PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment. They are widely used in manufacturing everything from non-stick coatings to firefighting foams and industrial lubricants.
Other emerging contaminants include:
- Microplastics from industrial processes
- Pharmaceutical residues entering wastewater streams
- Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) from detergents and solvents
Because of their persistence, bioaccumulation and potential health risks these substances are now under increasing scientific and regulatory scrutiny.
Why Businesses Need to Act Now
The UK Environment Agency has already identified PFAS as a high-priority contaminant and stricter discharge limits are on the horizon. This will particularly affect sectors such as:
- Petrochemical manufacturing
- Pharmaceuticals
- Food and beverage processing
- Metal finishing and engineering
Failing to act early could lead to:
- Compliance fines for exceeding discharge limits
- Reputational damage linked to forever chemical pollution
- Rising disposal costs from ineffective treatment methods

Innovative Treatment Approaches
Traditional wastewater treatment systems cannot fully remove PFAS or many other emerging contaminants. At Oates Environmental we tackle this challenge with our bespoke ultrafiltration treatment system, the largest of its kind in Europe.
Our process:
- Treats both hazardous and non-hazardous liquid effluents
- Produces a 95% non-hazardous permeate, safely discharged under consent to Yorkshire Water for recycling into potable and household supplies
- Generates a 5% high-calorific concentrate that is repurposed as fuel in cement kilns
This approach achieves up to 100% recyclability of liquid effluent, avoiding landfill and supporting the UK’s circular economy.
Partnering for a Sustainable Future
PFAS and emerging contaminants represent the next frontier in wastewater treatment. By working with Oates Environmental businesses can:
- Stay ahead of future regulation
- Protect their reputation
- Demonstrate genuine environmental leadership
We are committed to working with industry, regulators and technology providers to develop solutions that protect both business and the environment.
